quèshí is a graphic design studio based in Hangzhou, China. Its practice spans design and research, encompassing brand identity systems, exhibition visual design, publications and printed matter, and experimental work around media and language.

The studio takes typography as its central inquiry, treating written language as a material that carries both position and cultural weight — every choice of form, language, and arrangement is itself a kind of statement. quèshí continuously explores how written language can be reunderstood and redeployed across different media and contexts, drawing on calligraphic traditions, historical typesetting, and diverse writing cultures to extract underlying principles of order and aesthetics, translating them into a design language oriented toward the present. This work is concerned with form, and equally with the shifting relationships between language, culture, and modernity.

Founded in late 2020 by Zhuang Yanhongrui and Liu Tianfu, both graduates of the MFA Graphic Design program at California College of the Arts.
